The Story

In partnership with Churchill Downs and in celebration of the 150th Anniversary of this iconic event, Brackish has created its first official Kentucky Derby collection. While racing is at the forefront, style is an indispensable part of the fanfare with fashion that combines charm and sophistication with the occasional whimsical touch. To honor the dress-to-impress mentality, each piece in our collection is inspired by the fashion-forward designs, bright colors and bold ensembles that can only be found trackside in Louisville.

These jockey silk inspired earrings are named after the traditional southern drink, the mint julep. As synonymous with the Derby as big hats and bow ties, it was originally crafted as a morning drink for the hard-laboring Kentuckians working on horse farms or in the horse-racing industry.  As aspirin was not yet available, they would make a Mint Julep - bourbon to soothe your aches and pains, sugar to give you some energy, and mint to help open the eyes. In 1938, it became the official drink of the Derby and was rumored that Meriwether Clark (founder of Churchill Downs) grew the mint behind the clubhouse to be used in all Derby Day juleps.
